why I considered myself a feminist...

There is a discussion happening on Essential Baby about Violence towards Women, due to the horrific reports coming out this week about violence that is being done to women worldwide.

This post caught my attention and I have been given permission to repost it here and on my facebook.

Thank you Jeanie In Paradise!

I once had a work colleague who asked why I considered myself a feminist.

I said that I enjoyed the fact that I could vote - that was not done without feminist agitation.

I was educated and had such opportunities - that was not done without feminist agitation.

I could work and assume that efforts were being made for their to be some lip service to me being paid at least 70% of a man - that was not done without feminist agitation.

Should I ever become married, I would still be considered my own person and not a chattel of my husband - that was not done without feminist agitation.

Should my husband ever beat me or violate me, it would no longer be considered his right but (hopefully) justice would be contemplated - that was not done without feminist agitation.

Should I have a child, I would have the option of working or not working after I had the child and support would be in place around me that my spouse/partner - or some agency - would consider the welfare of me and my child a priority - that was not done without feminist agitation.

There are many, many reasons why we should all applaud feminism for where we are - and support it for the rights that we already have won, and those that we should - and those that other women should.
